Burning LP is Solana's strongest anti-rug signal, it's nearly free, and it's permanent — which is exactly why the transaction should be the last step of a checklist, not a vibe. Here's how to do it properly, including the version that keeps paying you fees.
How do you burn LP tokens on Solana?
You burn LP tokens on Solana by sending them to the token burn instruction (or the incinerator address), permanently destroying your claim on the pool — the liquidity stays tradable forever and can never be withdrawn by anyone. Mechanically it's one transaction: locate the LP token in your wallet, use a burn function (Solana's native token tooling supports burns directly), confirm, done. The transaction is public on Solscan and becomes your proof. The mechanics are the easy part; the two decisions before the transaction — whether to burn at all, and whether to use a fee-earning permanent lock instead — are where projects get it right or wrong.
What is Raydium Burn & Earn, and should you use it instead?
Burn & Earn is Raydium's native option to permanently lock a position while continuing to earn its trading fees — the burn's trust signal without giving up the fee income, free. For Raydium pools it's usually the smarter version of burning: holders get the same irreversibility guarantee (the liquidity can never be pulled), while the creator keeps collecting the pool's fee yield. If your pool is on Raydium and you've decided on permanence, use Burn & Earn rather than a raw burn — same signal, better economics. Details and mechanics are in Raydium's documentation; read them before executing, since position types differ.
What should you check before burning?
Run this five-item gate before any irreversible transaction, because "we burned too early" is an unfixable sentence:
- Is this the final pool? If a migration to a deeper pool, different pair, or different DEX is plausible, burning strands the capital. That's the classic case for a time lock instead.
- Will you ever need listing capital? CEX market-making requires inventory and liquidity you may be burning right now.
- Are you burning the right token? Confirm the mint address of the LP token, not your project token. This error happens; it is not recoverable.
- Is the amount right? Some projects burn most LP and time-lock a working remainder — a legitimate hybrid if both halves are public.
- Is the team allocation handled? A burned pool with an unlocked team bag is half a promise — lock the team tokens before you announce the burn as your safety story.
If all five clear, burn with confidence — it's the right call for most community tokens, and we'd rather you do it well than talk you into a lock you don't need.
How do you prove the burn to your community?
Link the burn transaction on Solscan and pin it — the proof is one URL, and it's stronger than any badge. For Burn & Earn locks, link the position and Raydium's explanation of its permanence. Expect sophisticated holders to check three things: that the burned token was actually the LP token, that the burned amount was substantially all of the project-held LP, and that what remains (if any) is accounted for. Make all three checkable in your docs and the burn becomes a durable asset instead of a one-day announcement. Then finish the safety story: the launch checklist covers what sits around the burn.
FAQ
Is burning LP free? Effectively — you pay a Solana transaction fee (fractions of a cent). Raydium's Burn & Earn is also free.
Can I burn part of my LP? Yes. Partial burns are common in hybrid setups — burn the majority, time-lock a working remainder — but disclose both halves; a partial burn presented as a full one gets discovered.
Does burning stop the team from dumping tokens? No. Burning LP only makes the pool unpullable. Team supply, mint authority, and freeze authority are separate risks with separate fixes.
Burn or lock — how do I decide? If the liquidity has no future job, burn (or Burn & Earn on Raydium). If it has a nameable future job, lock with the reason published. The full comparison walks the decision.
